How Running Coaching Improved Imogen’s Cross-Country Speed & Efficiency

Imogen’s Journey: Running Training for Young Athletes

Imogen is a dedicated young athlete who specialises in both cross-country and track running. Seeking to improve her performance on challenging terrains, she approached The Running School in Birmingham with the goal of refining her technique to enhance speed and efficiency. Despite her strong endurance background, she recognised the importance of optimising her running mechanics to reach her full potential.

Biomechanical Analysis: Running Form & Efficiency

As part of Imogen’s initial assessment, we conducted a detailed Biomechanical Analysis to evaluate her running patterns at various speeds. This allowed us to identify key inefficiencies that were limiting her performance:

  • Overstriding: Imogen was relying heavily on her anterior chain for propulsion, resulting in a stride that extended too far in front of her body. This led to excessive ground contact time, reducing efficiency and slowing her down. Additionally, her forward lean contributed to this issue.
  • Foot Strike Pattern: She demonstrated a heel-strike landing with a high-toe position.
  • Arm Drive and Posture: Her arm movement was not as effective as it could be, impacting her overall running mechanics and balance.

Optimising Running Efficiency and Injury Prevention in Young Athletes

To help Imogen achieve her goals, we designed a targeted training programme incorporating Dynamic Movement Skills (DMS) training and specialised running technique drills to enhance efficiency and minimise discomfort. Key areas of focus included:

  • Glute & Hamstring Activation: We prioritised activation of the glutes and hamstrings to encourage greater posterior chain engagement, reducing her reliance on the anterior chain and minimising overstriding.
  • Landing Mechanics: Adjustments were made to her landing technique to optimise ground contact while improving propulsion.
  • Arm Drive & Postural Adjustments: We worked on refining her arm mechanics and reducing her forward lean, leading to improved rhythm, balance, and speed.

  • Speed Development with Dynamic Movement Skills: We implemented DMS training to improve Imogen’s coordination, agility, and acceleration. By focusing on fast footwork drills and explosive movement patterns, we enhanced her ability to generate speed efficiently, particularly when navigating uneven cross-country terrain. Additionally, we incorporated single-leg balance exercises within DMS training to improve stability and control, which is essential for maintaining efficiency on unpredictable surfaces and reducing the risk of imbalance-related injuries.

Achieving Results: Personal Bests and Enhanced Running Performance

Following six weeks of structured training, Imogen demonstrated significant improvements in her running technique. These refinements resulted in greater efficiency, reduced fatigue on race days, and a notable increase in performance.

Since training with The Running School in Birmingham, Imogen has achieved new personal bests across multiple distances in both cross-country and track. Most importantly, she is now running with improved form, allowing her to focus on further progress and future competition success.
