Claudia is a singles and doubles HYROX athlete who has previously competed in ultra marathons and CrossFit. When she came to The Running School, her goal was to improve her running technique and speed for HYROX. Her previous injuries included lower back and left patella knee pain. Claudia’s Biomechanical Analysis found that she was anterior dominant, overstriding, and compensating with her shoulders and upper thoracic when running.
Claudia’s overstride was ahead of her centre of gravity, meaning she spent a long time on the ground, causing stress through the ankle, Achilles, knee, hip, and back. By correcting her running technique in combination with glute-hamstring activation, she wouldn’t be landing out ahead of herself, meaning the hamstring wouldn’t have to do the breaking job as well as propulsion. Her proprioception was slower on her left side due to pain previously manifesting itself on that side.
We utilised a combination of DMS and single-leg box jumps to improve ground reaction time, lightness, and speed. Prescribing Claudia with some mid-thoracic and rotation exercises to improve mobility allowed for the correction of the arms when running to become easier. As Claudia’s technique improved, so did her performance in the sessions, which enabled us to push her speed endurance with speeds of up to 20kph at 8-10% incline.
Claudia went on to perform well in her HYROX events… and has continued training hard for the future.
